Discord Keeps freezing? Try these 7 Solutions

One common issue users face is Discord freezing, which can be a frustrating experience that disrupts your ability to communicate with others.

If you’re experiencing Discord freezing, don’t worry, several solutions can help you fix the problem and get back to chatting with your friends or colleagues.

This article will explore some of the most effective solutions for fixing Discord freezing issues, so you can continue using this powerful communication tool without interruptions.

Why is my Discord constantly freezing?

Various factors can cause Discord to freeze. Some of these factors include:

  • Outdated software: If you’re running an outdated version of Discord, it may not be optimized for your system, which can cause Discord to freeze on startup.
  • Large files or attachments: If you’re trying to upload or download large files or attachments, it can cause Discord video calls to keep freezing.
  • Overloaded memory: Discord requires a significant amount of memory to function properly, and if your system is overloaded with other programs, it may cause Discord to freeze.
  • Network issues: Discord relies on a stable network connection to function properly, and if your internet connection is unstable or slow, it can cause Discord to freeze after League game.

How do you fix a stuck Discord?

Before trying the steps below, we recommend restarting your router or modem. In most cases, this is enough to fix the problem. Restarting your PC is also a good decision to solve this issue.

If this process did not fix this problem, follow the steps below.

1. Change your network settings

  1. Hold the Windows + I keys to open the Settings app and select Network & Internet.

  2. Go down and select Proxy from the left pane; on the right side of your screen, disable the Use a proxy server option under the Manual proxy setup option.
  3. Relaunch your Discord and check if the problem has been fixed.

2. Allow Disocrd to run through Firewall

  1. In the search bar, type control panel and choose Open.
  2. In the control panel window, locate and click the Category option, then choose Large icons.
  3. Scroll down and select Windows Defender Firewall from the list of options.
  4. In the next window, choose the Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall option.

  5. Select the Change settings button, scroll and locate Discord, check the box next to it, then click OK.

3. Change DNS settings

  1. Hold the Windows + R keys to launch the Run dialogue box, input ncpa.cpl into the dialogue box and hit Enter.
  2. Your system will display a list of all the available connections, right-click on the internet connection you are using and choose Properties.
  3. Scroll down, locate the Internet Protocol Version 4 option, and double-click on it.

  4. In the next window, check Use the following DNS server addresses option.
  5. Change the Preferred DNS server to 8.8.8.8 and the Alternate DNS server to 8.8.4.4.
  6. Select OK to save the changes you have made.

4. Close any conflicting application

  1. Hold the Windows + X keys and select Task Manager.
  2. Select the Details tab, locate any instances of conflicting apps, select them, and click the End task button.
  3. After ending the conflicting apps, relaunch Discord and see if the problem has been fixed.

5. Scan your system for malware or virus

  1. In the search bar, type Windows Security and click Open.
  2. Click the Virus & threat protection option.
  3. Next, click on the Scan options button.

  4. Select the Full Scan option to search every single file on your drives. Remember that this process might take several hours, depending on how many files you have on your PC.
  5. Choose the Scan now option to begin scanning your device.
  6. If any threat is detected, Windows will automatically remove it.

6. Turn off Windows Firewall

  1. Hold the Windows + R keys to launch the Run dialogue, type in firewall.cpl, and click the OK button.
  2. Select the Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off link on the left side of your screen.
  3. Choose Turn off for both the Private network settings and Public network settings.

  4. Select OK and restart your system.

7. Install another version of Discord

Three different versions of Discord are available, two designed for users who want to test out new or unreleased features. These versions can be used instead of the released version if you cannot install Discord in the conventional manner, even though they are less stable.

To get this version of Discord, follow the steps below.

  1. Select the version of Discord you want to install and ensure to install the latest release for an enjoyable experience.
    • Discord canary
    • Discord
    • Discord Public Test Build (Discord PTB)
  2. After downloading, launch the installer to check if it works. If it doesn’t work, try other versions.
